Technical TrainingIntroduction:

Our student courses combine creative practical exercises and short classes/workshops which communicate the basic principles of theatre lighting. They guide students towards understanding lighting its aims and interpretation. They also cover areas (including paperwork) that students would be assessed on if undertaking a performance support module as part of GCSE Drama or GCE Drama (Unit 2 AS and unit 3 A2) and practical work in a Creative and Media Diploma or BTEC(s) in Performing Arts.

All Courses begin with a short discussion on theory which is quickly followed with safe practical work. This allows students to experiment with light and enjoy the possibilities stage lighting design brings.

Students are not required to work at height.

Course content:

Courses one and two must be booked together in order to cover the basics; ideally these sessions should be spaced about one week apart. Relevant areas students are assessed on as part of the GCE and GCSE performance support module (lighting) are covered over the four courses.

Basic Lighting Design- Courses One and Two

  • What are the main choices the Lighting Designer is making
  • Choosing and mixing colours
  • Different lighting position/different effect
  • Still life exercise combining working with different colours and positions and discussing the difference between naturalistic and non-naturalistic lighting
  • The five basic types of lights and how we focus them
  • How we can help to tell the story, designing and realising atmospheric lighting for a static scene; delivered via group work

Intermediate Lighting Design - Course Three
