Winter Garden, Ilkley
The Winter Garden in the West Yorkshire village of Ilkley is a glass-roofed spa hall venue suitable for a range of functions from weddings to tea dances. Adjacent to the Winter Garden is The King's Hall, a traditional Edwardian theatre with a 500 seating capacity. Stage Electrics was initially contacted by The Friends of King's Hall, who had raised funds towards the cost of a new lighting installation, requesting an inspection of the Winter Garden's existing pea light function. As an alternative to the old pea light system, which had been out of action for 35 years and was in a state of disrepair, Stage Electrics suggested using colour changing LED fixtures.
The venue's variety of use was an important factor to take into consideration when creating the design of a new lighting system. It was advantageous that the new scheme incorporated changing colours as opposed to white light, to cater for weddings, social functions and exhibitions. Stage Electrics consulted Simon Cox from Pulsar, a leading manufacturer of LED lighting fixtures and control systems, to come up with a solution for the new pea lights which would complement the style of the listed building and revolutionise the lighting effects. A new fixture was designed exclusively for Stage Electrics by Pulsar and consisted of a Tri Colour LED light engine housed in a custom aluminium body with an integrated frosted dome optic enabling the light to be viewed from any angle whilst in the building. Special coloured paint finishes for the aluminum bodies allowed the fixtures to blend into their surroundings effortlessly. Simon Cox comments: "Working alongside Stage Electrics and their client has been great, with all parties having an input to the requirements of the application and the design of the custom fixture. With the bespoke fixture which we have manufactured it has been possible to realise a design solution that suited the application superbly."
The installation project involved removing damaged pea lighting and original wooden trunking and installing a new system designed specifically in keeping with the style of the previous pea lighting. The Winter Garden has three levels and the installation included replacing all levels in the venue with new pea lighting: 190 pea lights on the top level, 250 on the middle level and 210 on the bottom level. Stage Electrics' Projects, Manufacturing and Scenic departments worked closely on the project, with the Scenic department producing 102 metres of trunking constructed from best birch plywood and Manufacturing wiring the individual fixtures. The remaining fixtures were wired at the Winter Garden by on-site Stage Electrics technicians. Stage Electrics worked with the conservation officer from Bradford City Council to ensure the new lighting fitted in with the style of the building.
The new LED pea lights are significantly brighter with more energy efficient running costs, a variety of effects and with easier maintenance, have brought the venue back to life. Phase one and two of the installation was complete in September, the final phase is due for completion in December 2009.
