Liverpool CUC - Case Studies
The Novas Scarman Group launched four Contemporary Urban Centres (CUCs) across the UK to reflect themes of contemporary life in the urban environment. Stage Electrics was challenged to provide the technical design and realisation of all the entertainment systems for the Liverpool CUC and its five entertainment venues: a music venue, The Wake Theatre, The Bird Studio, a small performance space and a cinema.
Stage Electrics was involved in the project from the design, specifying everything from the performance and house lighting to the PA and technical communications, projection and video systems and the layout of all control rooms. The design also specified show relay and CCTV systems. In addition, Stage Electrics was responsible for the design and specification of emergency lighting systems, audio induction loops, working lights plus some scenic and staging elements.
The aim of the CUC is to create an employment and training infrastructure for marginalised communities, the homeless and artists. Hence, the equipment specified is intuitive to learn, yet still reflects wider industry practice and usage.
Following planning works, Stage Electrics was chosen to supply and install all of the entertainment equipment and system infrastructure for all four venues. In terms of lighting, the company specified a combination of Zero 88 dimmers in the three smaller venues with Zero 88 Jester lighting control in the cinema and the smaller performance venue. An ETC Congo Junior was used in both The Bird Studio and The Wake Theatre. For The Wake Theatre, Stage Electrics also supplied 96 ways of avolites dimming and relay channels contained in two ART 2000 T4 touring dimmer / relay racks. All loose equipment was also specified and supplied.
Each venue has flexible audio systems installed where facility panels and signal patches allow connectivity between the floor and other areas. All venues use the RCF Acoustica and RCF TT range of loudspeakers. A combination of fixed and portable equipment racks furnish each space, containing sound source equipment, power distro and sound signal links. Microphones used are a combination of Shure and Sennheiser. All four of the performance spaces have facilities for projection with the cinema offering full 5.1 surround sound.
Stage Electrics' ability to provide a fully integrated service and control the entire installation helped manage the project, producing incredible results.
"Stage Electrics was a great company to work with, from the design stage to the completed project."
