Technical production infrastructure upgrade for the Royal Shakespeare Company
Creating a versatile, future-proof playhouse
For its first major refurbishment in many years, the Royal Shakespeare Company asked Stage Electrics to redesign and install the Swan Theatre’s entire electrical and audio-visual infrastructure.
Over 550 days on site our specialists renewed power distribution, data and fibre networks while re-using suitable infrastructure wherever possible, delivering a sustainable system that significantly reduces change-over time between productions.
The Challenge
Heritage building, modern expectations
Covid-19’s closure created a rare window for modernisation, but the Grade II-listed fabric placed strict limits on invasive works.
The original ceiling-mounted rigging grid restricted load capacity and creative scope; relocating that weight to the walls called for a complete re-engineering of the theatre’s electrical services.
Any solution had to respect heritage constraints, meet tight sustainability targets and keep long-term operating costs under control.
The Solution
Integrated electrical and data backbone
- Refurbished or replaced 59 lighting and 33 sound facility panels.
- Commissioned 700 + electrical circuits, re-purposing 50 % of existing wiring and installing 18 km of new power, data, audio, video and fibre lines.
- Built dedicated control racks for lighting, audio, video and stage-management systems; every tie-line terminated, tested and labelled by Stage Electrics engineers.
- Integrated infrastructure now includes: 517 production-lighting circuits, 193 Ethernet lines, 122 fibre pairs, 96 speaker outputs, 118 12 G-SDI video lines, 47 cue-light stations and three stage-management positions.
- A full-time Stage Electrics project manager co-ordinated all trades on site, accelerating decisions and maintaining programme momentum.
The Result
A heritage theatre, technically transformed
One of the UK’s most technically advanced and adaptable theatres – the upgraded infrastructure gives the RSC a platform that can evolve with new production technologies.
- Greater creative scope – transferring the production grid load to the walls freed ceiling space for larger scenic pieces, richer lighting designs and special effects.
- Operational efficiency – with 517 production-lighting circuits, 193 Ethernet lines and 122 fibre pairs all clearly labelled and routable, the in-house team now re-patch in minutes and “work smarter, not harder”.
- Environmental targets met – around 50 % of the existing cabling was re-purposed, reducing waste while still commissioning more than 700 new electrical circuits.
- A trusted partnership – Stage Electrics’ engineers integrated seamlessly with the RSC, keeping the programme on schedule and acting more like a specialist division than an external supplier
