Rochdale Sixth Form College Transforms Theatre with New LED Lighting Rig
Rochdale Sixth Form College has taken a big step forward in energy efficiency and creative capability by upgrading its 15-year-old tungsten lighting rig to a state-of-the-art LED system supplied by Stage Electrics. The new rig, featuring Chauvet moving lights and ETC profiles, promises to enhance the learning and performance experience for students and staff alike.
Sean Scholes, the college’s Performing Arts and Music Technician, shared insights into the transformation:
“Our old tungsten rig was reliable but outdated, and maintaining it was becoming increasingly challenging. The decision to move to an LED system was driven by efficiency and performance goals. We’ve always trusted ETC equipment, so we knew what to expect there. The Chauvet demo kit really impressed us, and the moving lights added a whole new level of versatility to what we can achieve on stage.”
The rig is already making an impact across various departments, from A-Level Performing Arts to extracurricular enrichment programmes. Students now have the chance to learn and operate professional-grade lighting as part of the college’s annual musical production, which this year is Legally Blonde. The new system is also invaluable for photography and other creative applications.
The benefits of the upgrade extend beyond the stage. As Sean explained:
“This isn’t just about better lighting – it’s about energy efficiency and sustainability. LED fixtures mean we no longer have to relamp, and they’re far more energy-efficient than our old gear. The colour depth on the ETC profiles is outstanding, offering everything from rich, saturated tones to delicate pastels, which enhances the visual impact of every performance.”
Stage Electrics played a key role in the successful implementation of the upgrade, with their team providing expert advice and ongoing support. Sean praised their collaboration:
“Jayney has been fantastic. She’s been a regular visitor and helped us select the perfect setup for our needs. Stage Electrics has been instrumental in helping us bring our theatre up to industry standards. They’ve supported us through other projects too, like installing a new sound console last year and even fitting our curtain rail.”
The new LED rig has transformed the college’s theatre into a more versatile and professional space, empowering students and staff to explore new creative possibilities. As Sean concluded:
“This upgrade has opened up so many opportunities. We can light anywhere in the venue without difficulty, and the system is straightforward enough for students to learn on while still being capable of delivering industry-standard results. It’s a game-changer for us.”
